Peoria, Tazewell, And Woodford: Here, There & Everywhere

After Camping by Mike Foster

AFTER CAMPING

The fat slug body of the baby adder

Rolls over, showing shiny blue white

Belly.

He bites at air.

He is

Sick and cold. And poison

The slim noiseless slide of the neon-striped

Garter snake. No leaf crackles.

A great ball of writing snakes.

The sudden splash of dawn.

Was that a man or an animal

Or the lord of bass

Roaring his threat

To his domain?
